Classroom and Behind the Wheel Courses

Classes are offered at all St. Johns county public high schools. Classes are available only to enrolled high school students who reside in St. Johns County. Home school and private school students must attend at the public high school for which they are zoned.

Behind the wheel training (Driving Track Day or Phase II): The first morning for all behind the wheel training is held at the First Coast Technical College Public Safety Campus, located at 3640 Gaines Rd. St. Augustine, FL 32084. A parent/Guardian is responsible for drop off at the FCTC Public Safety Campus.

Phase I: Learner Permit Preparation – $30.00

A classroom lecture designed to assist a student preparing to obtain a Learner Permit. The classes are conducted prior to school from 8am-9am for a total of 10 consecutive school days. On the last day, students will be administered the Learner Permit Knowledge Exam that is required to obtain a Learner Permit. In addition to the Phase I course, students must also complete a state required 4-hour online drug and alcohol course prior to obtaining a Learner Permit.

Driving Track Day – $150.00

*Driving Track Day is a Defensive driving course for intermediate teen drivers. Student must have a Learner Permit and at least a minimum of 10 hours of driving experience prior to registering for this course, not prior to attending.

An 8-hour driving course designed to improve students’ driving skills and confidence with practical experience. The course begins with a classroom lecture that focuses on the concepts of being a defensive driver, laws that relate to the operation of a motor vehicle, as well as course safety procedures. The 7 hour “Behind the Wheel” portion of the training will consist of braking, backing, parking, off road recovery, hydroplaning and lateral control movements. We will also introduce the student to driving in traffic situations as they drive on roadways within St. Johns County with a state certified driving instructor.

Phase II: Behind the Wheel – $350.00

*Phase II: Behind the Wheel is a Defensive driving course for intermediate to advanced teen drivers. Student must have a Learner Permit and at least a minimum of 20 hours of driving experience prior to registering for this course, not prior to attending.

A 27-hour driving course designed to improve students’ driving skills and confidence with practical experience. The class begins with a classroom lecture that focuses on the concepts of being a defensive driver, laws that relate to the operation of a motor vehicle, as well as course safety procedures. The 26-hour “Behind the Wheel” portion of the training starts on an off-road site working on braking, backing, parking, off road recovery, hydroplaning and lateral control movements. We will also introduce the student to driving in traffic situations (neighborhoods, downtown and interstate) as they drive on roadways within St. Johns County with a state certified driving instructor.
